Did this for a group art contest, the theme was Patriotic Pokemon. First try with copics and I guess it turned out okay? The gradient shading took hella long though.
I'm from Singapore, you can see the flag to the right of the piece, national colours of red and white, and our national animal is a lion. I thought it would be a bit obvious to go for Solgaleo since it might be cheesy cos it's a legendary, but still picked it in the end because it fits really well, and here's why.
Solgaleo is Steel and Psychic type, which fits well with the strong industry and education system in Singapore respectively. We started off like Cosmog, weak and helpless, then moving on to our period of change during independence at 1965, starting out afresh as Cosmoem, with limited capabilities, however advancing past and overcoming obstacles to become what we are today. Also fits well with the hot and humid weather I believe 😛
Changes I made to Solgaleo: I changed his mane to red, to fit the national colours, where the red head and white body is semi representative of the national flag. There's a small crescent in the center of his forehead, where his third eye is supposed to be, which is representative of the crescent moon in the national flag. The small points in his mane (originally are just streak-shaped) are modified to be 5 stars, which again is due to the national flag.
Moving down to the bottom of the body, I changed the red bands on his ankles to blue, symbolising the growth of Singapore from a small fishing village to one of the most well known countries in Asia. Our roots are in our ports, where we are strategically placed in the middle of trade routes. The small fins on his legs pay homage to the Merlion, another iconic symbol of Singapore, where it's a creature with a lion's head and a fish tail. (Go look it up!)
The last change I made was to the tail. Again, it's blue but tear shaped, to signify Singapore overcoming it's water shortage and becoming the pioneers of water technology, as we developed NEWater (recycled water) to deal with our local water shortage, instead of relying on other countries.
